I was recently featured in an article shared by the University of Michigan's art school, Stamps School of Art and Design. This past winter, in my last semester as an undergrad, I took an experiential course titled, "Memory, Aging, and Expressive Arts". Together with my fellow art students, we were partnered with older adults with dementia at U-M Geriatrics' Silver Club. Every Thursday morning. my class would take the Stamps bus up the road to the Silver Club and create artwork with our partner. After a semester's worth of work, we had a gallery showing for our class at the U-M Botanical Gardens. The whole experience, working with my partner Jan*, learning about her history and skill set (she taught us cross-stitch!) was a valuable experience for myself as an artist, psychology student, and a future art therapist. As Anne mentions in the article, the most valuable advice I learned from this experience was, "...when you meet one person with memory loss, you’ve met one person,”.
